The word LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Today’s advanced laser technology allows us to safely and effectively treat many benign skin lesions, on an out-patient basis.

How does a VersaPulse® laser work?

The VersaPulse® laser uses an intense beam of light to gently remove unwanted, damaged, or diseased cells/lesions without harming the surrounding healthy cells. The VersaPulse® laser’s green-light energy is delivered in short, adjustable pulses, which minimizes bruising and discomfort.

How many treatments are required?

This depends on several factors such as: size, location, depth, and the color of your vascular or pigmented lesion. Spider Veins on the face and Cherry Hemangiomas generally diminish with one or two treatments, while darker or deeper birthmarks may require multiple treatments. Port Wine Stains and Hemangiomas are safely treated and respond well with a series of laser treatments. Rosacea is a disease that requires continual management. However, the VersaPulse® laser dramatically reduces the redness and flushing nature that Rosacea causes. Pigmented lesions require 1 to 3 sessions for safe removal. Treatments should be placed 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow your body the adequate time to remove the maximum amount of targeted cells. You will continue to see a lightening of your lesions after each treatment as your body disposes of the coagulated cells that have been treated with the VersaPulse® laser.

Are VersaPulse® laser treatments safe?

VersaPulse® lasers have been used in thousands of treatments. When properly performed by a trained physician or laser specialist, the VersaPulse® treatments are extremely safe and effective. There are many benefits to VersaPulse® laser surgery: Immediate results are visible; there is little, if any, discomfort; no numbing cream or injections are necessary for most patients; low risk of bruising; minimal swelling; and once the lesions are adequately treated, they usually do not return.

Do VersaPulse® laser treatments hurt?

Some patients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. Post treatment sensations are similar to a mild feeling of sunburn. The VersaPulse® uses a special “chilled tip” to cool the skin during treatment — this makes the treatment more tolerable as well as protects the skin. Most treatments do not require anesthetics.

What results can you expect?

Most patients will see improvement in their vascular lesions after the first treatment. This improvement can be quite dramatic. We document your results by using digital photography to map out your lesions pre- and post–operatively. However, as with any laser procedure, there is always a possibility that only minor changes will occur, and in rare cases, there is no response.

What is the ProFractional^TM Laser Treatment?

The ProFractional^TM laser is a “fractionated” Erbium:Yag 2940nm laser treatment that produces thousands of deep, precise, microscopic, thermal-columns into your skin without affecting any of the surrounding tissue. How is the ProFractional^TM laser different from other laser treatments?

Before Profractional^TM laser treatments, there were two types of available laser treatments: Fully ablative laser treatments (Co2 lasers) and non-ablative treatments. Fully ablative laser treatments involve the aggressive vaporization of skin cells at very high temperature. This treatment is very effective but it has been associated with a high incidence of side effects and requires months to heal. Non-ablative laser treatments have lower incidences of side effects with much shorter healing periods, but requires numerous treatments over many months, and they have had marginal results at best. ProFractional^TM treatments strive to offer the effectiveness of ablative lasers with the benefits of the gentler, non-ablative lasers.

How does the ProFractional^TM laser work?

The ProFractional^TM laser is designed to target specific portions of damaged tissue cells by creating microscopic “wounds” within the treatment areas. During the healing process, these microscopic channels of ablated tissue are attacked by the surrounding healthy tissue. As a result of this specifically targeted injury, the body’s natural immune response accelerates fibroblast production, which then grows the new collagen and elastin fibers that, ultimately, transforms your appearance.

What are the risks of ProFractional^TM Laser Treatments?

Swelling and redness are the most common side effects from this treatment. If swelling does occur, it is minimal and generally subsides within a two to four days. Redness may occur, and it will fade within a few days. Peeling of the skin may also occur. As always with skin surgery, there is a very limited risk of infection or scarring. Our physicians are available 24 hours a day to assess any potential complications and manage any issues that may arise during your healing process.

How many treatments will I need?

Clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 1-3 sessions, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. Results are immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months. This time frame and treatment structure allows for complete healing and replacement of damaged tissue with new collagen and elastin, and viable healthy skin cell growth.

Is the ProFractional^TM Laser Treatment painful?

Most patients describe the treatment as having a “prickling” sensation. A topical anesthetic is available if desired.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

We recommend using an antimicrobial ointment during the healing process. You must apply sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher (UVA/UVB) after every two hours of sun exposure. Avoid direct sun exposure during the healing process and for at least 3 months after treatment.
